The Auto de São João Batista will take place this Saturday (06) and Sunday (07), at 8 pm, at the Arcelino Costa Leitão Amphitheater, known as Buraco do Prefeito, in Praça São João Batista. The presentation is part of the official program of the 300th anniversary of São João de Assú and promises to move residents and visitors by celebrating the history of faith, devotion and culture that marks the identity of the people of Assú.

The show will be held in front of the stage structure that is being set up to host the national shows of São João de Assú, which take place from June 12 to 24. Recognized as the Oldest São João in the World, the event has its origin proven by historical documents that record its realization since the 18th century.

With the theme “300 Years of Light,” this year’s edition of the Auto de São João Batista portrays the birth, life, and martyrdom of the patron saint, connecting the audience to the religious roots that helped build the history of Assú over three centuries. The production highlights the strength of faith and devotion that transcend generations and remain alive in the municipality’s tradition.

The tricentennial of São João de Assú is already transforming the city into a grand stage of faith, culture, and tradition. With decorated streets and a program that brings together religious, cultural, and musical events, Assú is prepared to receive thousands of visitors during the June festivities. The expectation is that the festival will boost the local economy, stimulating the hotel industry, bars, restaurants, and commerce in general.

Realized with the support of the Assú City Hall, the Auto de São João Batista is directed by producer Diana Fontes and mobilizes approximately 100 professionals, including artists, executive team, technicians, and support staff. The cast consists of 33 actors from Assu, showcasing local talent and bringing together teenagers, adults, and seniors in a grand celebration of popular culture.

For the mayor of Assu, Lula Soares, the spectacle reinforces the importance of faith and culture in building the municipality’s identity.

“Celebrating 300 years of our São João festival is also recognizing the strength of our faith and the traditions that span generations. The Auto de São João Batista is moving, preserves our history, and values the talents of our land, showing the world the cultural richness of the people of Assu,” highlighted the mayor.
